Learning Beyond the Classroom
Work Experience is a core part of Transition Year, giving students the opportunity to step into the world of work, build confidence, and explore future career paths.
As highlighted in the national TY Programme Statement, Career Exploration is a key area of student development, and first-hand workplace experience plays a central role in helping students make informed decisions about their future.
Why Work Experience Matters
Work Experience helps students to:
- Gain real insight into different careers
- Develop confidence, independence and responsibility
- Build essential life and workplace skills
- Improve communication and teamwork
- Explore personal interests and strengths
- Make more informed Leaving Certificate subject choices
How It Works
TY students take part in Work Experience every Wednesday.
Finding a Placement
Students are encouraged to take responsibility for securing their own placement, with support from the school.
Students should:
- Think about their interests and career ideas
- Contact employers (email, phone, or in person)
- Be proactive and organised
The school supports students by:
- Providing guidance and advice
- Sharing placement opportunities where available
- Helping prepare students for applications
Requirements Before Placement
To ensure a safe and positive experience, students must:
- Complete all required school documentation (available above)
- Provide employer contact details
- Ensure parent/guardian consent is in place
- Follow school guidelines regarding appropriate placements
All placements must be approved by the school before beginning.
During Work Experience
Students represent both themselves and the school. They are expected to:
- Be punctual and reliable
- Dress appropriately for the workplace
- Show initiative and willingness to learn
- Respect workplace rules and staff
- Communicate effectively
- Refain from using your mobile phone during working hours unless permitted for work-related purposes
This is an opportunity to make a positive impression and gain valuable experience.
Reflection & Learning
Work Experience is not just about attending — it’s about learning.
Students will:
- Keep a logbook.
- Reflect on their experiences weekly.
- Evaluate what they have learned about themselves and the workplace.
This forms part of their TY Portfolio, a key element of the programme .
Assessment
Work Experience is assessed through:
- Employer feedback
- Student reflection (portfolio)
- Participation and engagement
This contributes to the student’s overall TY progress and development.
Support & Communication
We work closely with:
- Parents/Guardians
- Employers
- Students
to ensure asafe, meaningful and positive experience for all.
