AIMS/ AIDHMEANNA

To actively involve students in the life of the school.
To support the school ethos.
To promote good relationships between Students and Staff, Board of Management and Parents’ Association.
To represent the views of students.
To foster social awareness activities and learning activities.
To review policy documents and teaching and learning programs when required.

STRUCTURE/ STRUCHTÚR

The Student Council consists of 18 students and 1 staff member as follows:

ELECTION PROCEDURES/ NÓSANNA IMEACHTA TOGHCHÁIN

At the beginning of the school year each class will elect a class captain. Suitably interested candidates must get a nomination form signed and validated by their year head. If there is more than one interested candidate per class, a vote will be held on election day to decide.
The class captains for each year group will meet with the liaison teacher to elect two representatives per year group to the Student Council.
The liaison teacher will consult with the year heads who will nominate an extra representative for each year group, bringing the total student membership to 18.
The principal and year heads reserve the right to veto any individual whose discipline has been poor during the previous school year.
The principal, in consultation with the relevant year head and liaison teacher, reserves the right to remove any member of the Student Council during the school year if the member’s lack of good discipline should warrant it.
The principal and Board of Management reserve the right to suspend the Student Council in the event of it pursuing a course of action deemed detrimental to the school.

EXECUTIVE OFFICERS/ OIFIGIGH FEIDHMIÚCHÁIN

The Student Council will meet as soon as it is fully formed to elect the following officers:

A chairperson/cathaoirleach to preside over the meetings in accordance with proper procedure and represent the Student Council where and when required.
A vice-chairperson/leas-chathaoirleach to assist the chairperson in their duties and act as chair in their absence.
A secretary/rúnaí to write up the minutes of each meeting and alert members when the meetings are on and what is on the agenda.
An assistant secretary/rúnaí cúnta to assist the secretary in their duties and act as secretary in their absence.
A public relations officer (PRO)/oifigeach caidrimh phoiblí (OCP) to promote good communications between the Student Council and the student body, staff, parents, Board of Management and the wider community.

LIAISON TEACHER/ MÚINTEOIR CAIDREAMH

Appointed by the principal to assist in the establishment and proper functioning of the Student Council.
Acts as a link between staff and Student Council.
Has a voice but not a vote.
Is a source of information.

MEETINGS/ CRUINNITHE

All council members are expected to attend all meetings.
Meetings will take place every two or three weeks or as the need arises.
The minimum number of students present to have a formal meeting is 10,
(quorum is half the student membership plus one).
Any decision made or action taken must have the support of 12 of the 18 members, (two-thirds majority).
An agenda is set in advance and adhered to.
An attendance record is kept and minutes are taken.
All council members get an equal say and are expected to contribute to each meeting.
All problems discussed at meetings must be treated with discretion, respect and confidentiality.
The liaison teacher (or a nominated staff proxy) must be present for a formal meeting to take place.

The following matters are excluded from meetings:

any uncomplimentary mention of staff, management or pupil by name or implication,
individual grievances between pupil and teacher,
ongoing disciplinary matters involving a student or group of students.
