Spanish is part of the full curriculum offered at Pobalscoil na Tríonóide and is going from strength to strength. It is currently taught to first, second and transition year students. Our current first and second year students will have the opportunity to continue with Spanish as their chosen modern foreign language – a prerequisite to entry into the NUI colleges – all the way through to sixth year.
Content
The aims of the Spanish syllabus at Junior Cycle include the following:
- Students should be able to express themselves and
understand Spanish as the main communicative language within the classroom - Students should be equipped with a competence in Spanish which
would enable them to communicate basic necessities when travelling in
Spain or Latin America. Examples of such situations include the following:

Spanish speaker; book a train or bus ticket; book a room in a hotel; order
a meal at a restaurant; explain what is wrong if they feel unwell. - Students will focus on building accuracy and fluency in the four

For 2nd and 3rd years, we have a pen pal system set up with a school in Madrid, The Bristol College, which is a bilingual secondary school with 800 students enrolled. Their Spanish students complement their English language learning with a month stay in their Irish School, Youghal International College. This gives our students the opportunity to meet with their pen pal friends and the great chance to improve each other’s second language.
