History Junior Cert

Students choose four topics, two Irish and two European/World from a list of eight
The topics contain key personalities and key case studies to be analysed.
Two text books required – One Irish, one European/World.

Assessment
A pre-prepared special topic essay to be handed in prior to the Leaving Certificate
exam. – A 2 3/4 hour terminal exam. 4 questions to be answered, 3 essays and a
documents question.

Key times of Year
The special topic must be completed by April of 6th Year (20% of overall mark in
Leaving Certificate).

Archaeology, Civil Service, Teaching, Museum Work, Law, Trade Union Official,
Prison Service, Garda, Tourism, Broadcasting and Librarianship.

Brief Subject Content
Three year course in which students learn about ancient, middle and modern history.
One book is required, ‘Focus on the Past’.
Assessment for Junior Certificate
Written exam at Higher and Ordinary level.
