Eileen Reddy retires from Pobalscoil

Our school community bid a fond farewell to Eileen Reddy today on the occasion of her  retirement from Pobalscoil.  Eileen has managed the school canteen since we opened our doors in 2006.  The school community would like to thank Eileen for her valuable contribution to Pobalscoil over the years.  We wish her every happiness and good luck for the future.

Members of our class wrote letters to Mr. O’ Ceallacháin, Ms. Heffernan and Ms. McCarthy, our Year Head, asking permission to continue with what we had planned. Once we had permission we set our plans in motion.

We decided to invite a TD in to speak with us about the voting system in Ireland. We sent him a letter and made a follow up phone call, then organised who would do what job for the visit. Other members of the class bought the TD, David Stanton, a Thank You card and a gift from Jack O’Patsy’s in town, using money we had collected from everyone in our class.

Mr Stanton visited us during a CSPE class. He spoke with us, then took our questions for the remainder of the class. We found the visit very beneficial as he gave us a lot of useful information for our project.

In the classes following that, we prepared for the mock election. We chose candidates, and the class was divided into groups that each had a specific job. We made ballot papers, ballot boxes, decided on the layout for our classroom, where the voting was going to take place, and got a list of everyone in Third Year from the office.

We held the actual election during lunch on the 9^th of December. Afterwards, we went through the process of counting the votes. Everyone thought they learned a lot from the project, and gave them a better understanding of elections in general, which was helpful because the Irish Presidential Election was happening at the time.

Safer Internet Day is part of a global drive to promote a safer Internet for all users, especially young people. The 8th Safer Internet Day will be celebrated on 7th February 2012 in many countries across the world, including Ireland, centred on the theme “Connecting generations and educating each other”, where they encourage users young and old to “discover the digital world together…safely”!.

Student Council General Assembly 2011/12

The Student Council held a very successful non-uniform day on December 16^th 2011. Class Captains collected €2 from all students who chose not to wear uniform on that day. Teachers also supported the fundraiser by wearing ‘casual clothes’. The total amount collected was €1147.The money collected will be used to help pay for the improvements to the school pitch. This was the third non-uniform day organised by the Student Council during the last two years. The Council would like to thank all those who contributed or helped in any way. The Council hopes to organise a similar day during the last term.

Congratulations to the school’s Equestrian team who came third in the team event in the Ballyrafter Inter-school’s show jumping championship at Lismore on the 29/01/12.

The team consisted of Patrick Joyce, Shane Harte, Elaine Meade and Daniel Joyce.

Congratulations to Elaine Meade who came 4^th in the individual competition and to Patrick Joyce who came 6^th.

Riders and Horses as follows:

Elaine – Murphy Magic, Patrick –  King Kong, Daniel – Lucky and Shane – Airborne Archie.

Our third year class on 3a2, with the help of our C.S.P.E teacher Ms Fitzgerald, decided to do our C.S.P.E Action Project in aid of the Irish Guide Dog Association. We sold Christmas Cards and we also held a raffle in the school to raise money. The prize for the raffle was a hamper containing a black, cuddly toy, along with a number of chocolates and a selection box. The raffle was won by Garry Moloney.

On the 16th of December, we had a talker in from the Irish Guide Dog Association called Joe Duffy. He brought along his guide dog Trudie who is retired. He talked to us about what the aims of the Irish Guide
Dog Association are, and the steps in training of a guide dog. It was a very interesting talk and Joe gave us a book from the Irish Guide Dogs as a token of his appreciation for his fundraising. It takes €38,000 to train a guide dog so we were more than happy to donate €750 to the Irish guide dogs.
It was an extremely interesting and enjoyable action project.
