Chemistry
The Leaving Certificate Chemistry course is a wide-ranging and interesting subject
for students who have a liking for Science.
What do you study?
Atomic Chemistry, Molecular Bonding, the Periodic Table of Elements, Physical
Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry.
There is also a very important practical aspect to the subject. Each student is
expected to carry out 28 mandatory experiments and to keep a laboratory
notebook of his/her work. While this does not earn the student any marks in his/her
final year, an inspector of the Dept. of Education and Science, may at any time ask
to see it. A student may be prevented from sitting his/her final exam if this is not
kept to the inspector’s satisfaction.
Assessment
One terminal three hour exam.
Courses and Careers with Chemistry
Chemistry is a core science subject and offers a wide range of opportunities in the
Scientific field including Brewing, Bio-Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, the
Pharmaceutical Industry, Pharmacy and Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
*Human Nutrition and Dietetics in DIT requires a HC3 in Chemistry
*Dentistry, Pharmacy and Medicine in UCC requires HC3 in Chemistry plus HC3 in Physics or Biology
*Veterinary Medicine in UCD requires HC3 in Chemistry
