Biology involves the study of three units:
Unit One – Biology -the study of life
Unit Two – The Cell
Unit Three – The Organism
A: Diversity of Organisms
B: Plant Anatomy and Physiology
C: Human Biology
Assessment
A terminal three hour exam which includes a section on practical work undertaken during the course and recorded in a journal. While this does not earn the student any marks in his/her final year, an inspector of the Dept. of Education and Science may at any time ask to see it. A student may be prevented from sitting his/her final exam if this is not kept to the inspector’s satisfaction

Biology is an essential aspect of careers which include, Oceanography, Ecology, Medicine, Biotechnology, Agricultural Research, Oceanographer, Zoologist, Radiographer, Nursing, Marine Biologist, Occupational Therapist, Microbiologist, Geneticist, Health Inspector, Biomedical Scientist, Dietician, Food Scientist, Chiropodist and Paramedic.
*Students wishing to study Genetics in UCC require a HC3 in Biology in Leaving
Certificate
*Students wishing to study Beauty Therapy at Cork College of Commerce require
Leaving Certificate Biology.
*Biology is an essential requirement for entry to Dental Hygiene Nursing (UCC)
