Applied Maths
The Leaving Certificate Applied Maths course is a wide-ranging course which acts
as a huge benefit to students who are thinking of taking Engineering at Third Level
What do you study?
1. Motion of a particle.
2. Newton’s laws.
3. Motion in a straight line under uniform acceleration

4. Equilibrium of a particle under concurrent forces, including friction.
5. Centre of gravity of simple bodies and systems of particles.
6. Liquid pressure. Thrust on a horizontal surface. Archimede’s Principle.
7. Projectiles. Projectiles on inclined plane.
8. Angular velocity. Uniform motion in a circle without gravitational forces. Conical
pendulum. Circular orbits.
9. Conservation of momentum. Collisions.
10. Simple harmonic motion of a particle in a straight line.
11. Motion of a rigid body about a fixed axis.
Assessment
A two and half hour terminal exam. There are no projects or other forms of assessment.

How is Applied Maths useful to me?
It is a huge advantage to any student thinking of taking up Engineering and/or
Science at Third Level. In addition, the problem solving skills which a student learns
are a bonus when studying Maths and Science at Second Level.
